Whoooo boy. American Idol contestant, Lou Dawg, just said what 25% of Americans would say about Katy Perry, what 50% of people would say about Lionel Ritchie, what 90% of people would say about Luke Bryant, and what 5% of people would say about Simon Cowell.
Source – The “American Idol” judges agreed on Sunday’s episode that contestant Lou Dawg was a “dreamboat.”
But viewers may have had that sinking feeling when he seemed to confuse panelist Luke Bryan with Justin Timberlake, had no inkling who Lionel Richie was, and couldn’t name a song by Katy Perry.
Dawg, from the Hawaii island Oahu, tried to explain his lack of pop culture knowledge by saying he’s been “in the ocean everyday.”
Dawg sang an original song that Perry thought might work on the beach after surfing, but needed more work. Dawg’s unclear show business aspirations didn’t impress the judges, either. They sent him home.
Ooof. My favorite reaction was that of Katy Perry, who knows she’s easily the most recognizable person on the panel. And to be fair, Luke Bryant being confused for Justin Timberlake is more of a compliment to him than anything else. But damn, to be a multiple grammy winner in the business for four decades and be confused for Pat friggin’ Sajak has to be a gut punch (which it apparently was, based on Ritchie’s reaction).
To be perfectly honest, I didn’t even know this show was back on the air. I haven’t watched an episode of American Idol since the Adam Lambert season. We’re in an era of reality show gimmicks (The Masked Singer, Love Is Blind, and that weird love at first dance show I can’t remember the name of). A straight up singing competition is so passé. In the 4chan era, what would give this show a ratings boost is to get a bunch of trolls in on the auditions in the hopes that at least ONE of them has some pipes. I’d watch the hell outta that, because 4chan would vote him as the winner. He just needs that IN.
I just miss when it used to be the Simon Cowell roast hour.
